Commercial Photography ~ Kitchen Design ~ Interior Design by Open Interiors

Again my love of photography and my love of Interior Design has collided. If you haven’t read any of my previous post my full time job is as an Interior Designer at Open Interiors. I absolutely love photography and do it on the side as much as possible.

This particular project was a kitchen renovation. This kitchen needed an update, I wish I had the before pictures to show you the transformation. There are so many different aspects to this kitchen but the most important one was to make it large enough to fit their family. The island plays a big role in bringing the kitchen and dining room together. The client fell in love with the countertop which is absolutely beautiful and ties the two toned cupboards in nicely. All new appliances were brought into the space including a microwave drawer.

Now I need to explain the microwave drawer, it is a microwave that sits in the cabinet and the microwave itself is the drawer. When I suggested a microwave drawer to the clients they thought that you put a normal microwave into a cabinet drawer. I didn’t think of this as I have seen multiple of these but this was something completely new to them at the time.

We enclosed the bay window that originally existed and moved the refrigerator into that space with a cabinet surround to obtain more storage space. This worked great for these particular clients as they did not use the bay window and felt it was a waste of space. The beautiful tile job was done by Kriss Kross tile, from Edmonton Alberta.

The top priorities for this new kitchen design were the following: more storage, more counter space, more movement for a large amount of people, easy maintenance, new appliances, and of course aesthetically pleasing. I think we hit the nail with this design and I was so happy to be able to take the pictures of this design to show all of you. Hope you all love the outcome as much as the clients do. 🙂

Professional Headshot’s ~ Brook Law ~ Nanaimo BC, Photographer

This was such a fun session. These two lovely ladies were a blast and the session was just full of laughs. Like most people they didn’t like their pictures being taken and have had bad experiences in the past; however, they were purely models. They were at ease in front of the camera and allowed me to really show their personality. I don’t do a lot of headshot sessions as I specialize in newborn, children and family photography but this was a fun session which makes me want to do more. 🙂

If anyone needs a lawyer please check out Brook Law. Erin is very personable and can help you out with whatever you need. Her firm opens May 2015.

Newborn ~ Tyler Bell ~ Nanaimo BC, Newborn Photographer

This little man did not want to sleep through the fun of this session. He was awake for 3hrs of the session. He finally fell asleep at the end and we were able to capture these beautiful shots. Luckily he cooperated to get some family shots. His big brother Ben was so fun to work with and he loved having his photo taken. He loves his little brother. This is such sweet little family that is full of love, laughter and kindness. ❤

Newborn ~ Jaiden & Emery Slater ~ Nanaimo, BC Newborn Photographer

I have been waiting for a long time to do a twin newborn session. When I found out my friend’s wife was pregnant with twins, I had to take their newborn photos. I was so excited to meet these two precious little angels. They were so sweet, the perfect little models and they both slept so soundly during the session. One of the best moments was when one of the girls spit up all over her sister while we were getting them into their sibling pose. It always goes that way but we cleaned them both up and tried again.

Their parents were absolutely wonderful and complete troopers. In my newborn session the majority of the time the newborns are naked which is threat for accidents. Usually I will get a peeing accident and occasionally I will get a poop accident well these girls were different. They constantly pooped throughout the whole session. The best part was when it was daddy’s turn to have his picture taken with his girls and they were pooping in his hands. He did really good and continued going with a few “eww’s” and “aww’s”. 🙂

This was one of the funnest and best sessions I have had. I enjoyed it immensely, the girls were very cooperative, the parents were wonderful and there are beautiful art forms that captured their short newborn time frame. This is why I love what I do, children grow up so fast and you will never get this precious time back but at least you can have beautiful photographs to remember this time. ❤

Commercial Photography ~ Eye Care Nanaimo ~ Interior Design by Open Interiors

Many of you may not know this but photography is not my main profession. It is a love of mine and I do it as much as I can but I am also an Interior Designer. I have my own interior design business with a partner that I went to school with. Our interior design business is called Open Interiors. We do both commercial and residential design.

Anyways this is my first commercial photography session. It is also one of our interior designs. I absolutely love when both of my passions come together. This project turned out beautifully and the clients were very pleased. You can go check it out, it is Eye Care Nanaimo on Dover rd, Nanaimo. In the mean time here are some photographs to show the beautiful design.

From then to now!

I am new to blogging and I probably won’t get it right but bare with me. I thought for my first blog I would tell you a little about me and why I became a photographer. I finished a minor in photography while I was completing my degree in Interior Design. I am now both a photographer and an Interior Designer.

I fell in love with photography and the moments you can capture. I truly love showing a child’s personality in a portrait that you can hang on your wall. I started out doing all forms of photography; family portraits, children portraits, baby portraiture, wedding photography and landscape photography. Each one has a different angle and expertise that needs to be used. I wanted to do it all in the beginning so I can learn as much as possible and then specialize in what I really want to do.

In my last year of school I was pregnant and had my first son. He was born November 7, 2011 weighing 7lbs 2oz and not even 1 week later I had to write a final exam. I only had one semester to finish in my demanding and intensive 4 year degree and I was going to finish it. So my son traveled with me to school for presentations, lectures and exams. I was lucky as I only have a 10 min drive, 15 min depending on traffic, to my parents. They were a big help in watching my son so I could finish my degree. It was crazy, stressful and I was completely out of my mind but I did it. When my son was born I really started getting into newborn photography, I don’t know how many photos I have taken of him. I also hired a photographer to capture his first year of his life, best investment ever. Here are a couple of the first newborn portraits I had ever taken of my little man, Decklen.

Newborn baby boy   November 2011

When my Decklen was 6 months old we found out we were pregnant again. This was not the greatest news at the time but now it is the best thing ever. My boys are super close and I wouldn’t have it any other way. He was born on January 24, 2013 and weighed 9lbs 7oz. Yup, he was a big boy and still is; however, I have another baby to practice my photography skills on. This time I was more educated so I could do all his first year photos myself. Again I have no idea how many photos I have taken of him as well. Here are a few of my sweet pea, Drayden.

Newborn baby boy

Holy man did I have a lot of work to do. Now this is my son so of course I absolutely love the photos but I needed to work on my techniques and skills so I could eventually specialize in newborn photography, as I fell in love with capturing the most important stage of someone’s life. Still today people always look back at their baby photos. Any important milestone in your life like weddings, graduations and even milestone birthdays often have slideshows where you show the wonderful and sweet baby photos. So I practiced as much as I could and I researched respectable and experienced photographers who I then learned from with their tutorials. I also worked on my editing skills as the editing is about 50% of the photography process. First you have to make sure you capture what you want in the camera, that can be tricky but once you get a good system down and have more experience it comes easily. Then you go to the computer where you spend countless hours creating this beautiful work of art for your clients. I personally will not send out any photos before the editing process, the portraits change dramatically from the SOC (shot on camera) to the final product.

Once I realized that I am decent at portraits and I absolutely love doing it, I wanted to start my own business. Now I do have an Interior Design business called Open Interiors with a business partner but why can’t you do more than one thing? I love both careers immensely and didn’t want to choose. Open Interiors is my main job and I get to do photography on the side; however, since both businesses just started in 2013 I am pretty much doing both full time.

So now I get to share with you some photos I have done after all my education. I will always continue to learn and always be adjusting things as if you don’t I feel like it would get boring. I also believe that you can never not learn more, there is always room to improve.
